Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery treats excess skin and fat pockets of the eyelids, indicated after individual assessment.

Indications

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is usually indicated to treat excess skin on the upper eyelids and fat pockets on the lower eyelids, which can give the eyes a tired appearance.

It may be indicated for aesthetic reasons, functional ones — when excess skin affects vision — or both, assessed individually.

Types of eyelid surgery

  • Upper eyelid — removal of excess skin, and fat when indicated.
  • Lower eyelid — treatment of fat pockets and, when necessary, excess skin.

Assessment

Extent defined individually

The amount of skin and fat removed is defined according to each person's anatomy, to preserve the eyelid's natural movement.

How it is performed

May be carried out in a hospital or outpatient setting, under anaesthesia agreed with the team, usually local with sedation. Incisions are usually placed along the eyelid's natural crease, to stay discreet.

Recovery

Swelling and bruising around the eyes in the first weeks are expected. Cold compresses and lubricating eye drops are usually advised; return to social activities is gradual, following the swelling's evolution.

Risks and factors that influence the outcome

Like any surgery, it involves risks — related to anaesthesia, temporary dry eye, changes in healing, among others — discussed individually.

Skin quality, contact lens use and adherence to post-operative care affect the outcome, which varies from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Does eyelid surgery change the shape of the eyes?

The goal is to remove excess skin and fat while preserving the eyelid's natural anatomy; changing the eye shape is not the aim of the procedure.

Does eyelid surgery treat dark circles?

It mainly treats excess skin and fat pockets; dark circles caused by pigmentation may need other treatments, assessed individually.

How long does swelling last after eyelid surgery?

It usually decreases significantly within the first weeks, but the timing varies from person to person.
